North American Carvers Contest Registration

Contest Rules

2017 North American Carvers Contest

This year, our 8th contest, we let you run free; show us what you can do, with Bamboo. The rules are simple: incorporate at least one piece of real bamboo into your pipe. And no, a bamboo dot doesn’t count. No Briar-Boo either (unless there is real bamboo as well).

Size does matter since we have to make a display case in advance, so nothing tiny, nothing giant. Other than that you are free to choose the shape, finish, color, etc.

The judges are George Dibos, Greg Pease & Chuck Stanion. Yes, they have discerning, critical eyes and they will see stuff you don’t. They will pick the seven best pipes to make the set.

The judging will be held on Friday, September 22nd, the night before the show at the Argosy. If you are bringing the pipe to the show, just make sure you get it to me by dinner; we start the judging afterwards.  If you are mailing your pipe, I need it no later than Thursday, Sept 21. Please send it sooner.

  • The contest is open to carvers that currently live in North America.
  • Please go to our club website and register for the contest. This helps me know how many and who is participating. This also helps sell the raffle tickets which means more money for the winners.
  • Pay the $20 entry fee, online, or mail/bring cash/check.
  • Do not mail your pipe signature required.
  • Make sure to include “with the pipe”, the contact info that you want used for the P & T photo spread (name, business name, email, phone), as well as return shipping info (where do we mail the pipe if you are not one of the seven selected).
  • If mailing, here is my address:

Quinton Wells

12827 Haskins St

Overland Park, KS 66213

Remember, this is a friendly competition; we do this to support and promote North American pipe makers. All entries will have a photo of their pipe, with contact info, published in a Pipes and Tobaccos magazine photo spread. Thank you Chuck Stanion!

Please help me help you, buy some raffle tickets, encourage your customers to buy raffle tickets. There are only 300 tickets, $25 each or 5 for $100. Tickets are available on our website. We cannot sell them at the show. On Sunday, September 24th, we will draw the winning raffle ticket and that person gets the 7 day set. The seven winning pipe makers split the proceeds of the raffle. You do the math.

Thank you for participating. Good luck to each of you.

8th Annual North American Carvers Pipe Making Competition

The 2017 contest pipe will be with “bamboo”. That’s it. Just create a pipe that uses bamboo and you have made the contest. Everything else is up to you. You can keep it simple as below or go crazy.

Author: A.S.P. Pipe Parts Charts, by Bill Burney, Copyright 2003-2011 (used by permission; all rights

Shape: Keep in mind that every detail counts. This applies to the entire pipe; the
bowl, the stem, the execution, the aesthetics, everything counts. The bowl may be
smooth, blasted or rusticated.

Size: The selected pipes must fit in a custom made case that will, of necessity,
be made ahead of time. Variation in size is expected, but pipes that will not fit in
the custom case will be eliminated from judging. Pipes fewer than 4 inches or
over 7 inches are at risk.

This contest came to be in an effort to support and promote North American
Carvers. It is working; just ask the carvers who have participated in the
first four. We all win, some get money, some get new customers, some stretch
and make a pipe beyond their previous abilities, but we all win. We are
showcasing North American Pipe Maker’s talents and the world is noticing. Each year the
caliber of pipe needed to be included in the set goes up.

By entering the contest, you are NOT donating your pipe. All non-winning pipes
will either be returned directly to you after the contest, or, if you prefer, offered
for sale at the show, at a price that you set. If it sells, we send you the
money, if not we send the pipe back to you.

Publicity: Everyone that participates in the contest will have a picture of their
pipe published in a photo spread in Pipes & tobaccos magazine along with
their name/contact info/web address (space allowing). If you don’t subscribe to
P&T, please do. The magazine is supporting us in a big way. Ask your customers
to support you, and the magazine, by subscribing.

The Club strongly recommends that you pick up the Fall 2013 issue of Pipes and
tobaccos magazine and read the article about the contest. The interview with the
judges (Greg Pease, Tad Gage & George Dibos) will give you an excellent insight
into what the judges are looking for and what they consider important.
